Porotech, co-founded by Dr. Yingjun Liu, along with Dr. Tongtong Zhu and Prof. Rachel Oliver, recently secures £3 million Seed investment led by Speedinvest alongside IQ Capital, Cambridge Enterprise, Martlet Capital and Cambridge Angels. This adds to £1.5m seed funding in 2020.

Porotech has created a new class of porous gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor material that is redefining what is possible. It offers performance improvements that are suitable for mass production and can be customised for individual customers’ needs. After launching the world's first commercial native red indium gallium nitride (InGaN) LED epiwafer for micro-LED applications, Porotech will now work to expand its novel approach to integrate InGaN-based red, green and blue (RGB) micro-LEDs for full-colour microdisplays.

“It is really honorable to be a MCG member. I always remember the exciting moment when the first chuck of porous GaN was made in MCG lab while I was Vasant’s postdoc,” said Porotech CTO and co-founder Dr. Yingjun Liu. “Vasant’s encouragement and inspiration allowed me to explore whatever idea I came up, and his continuous supports for years on all aspects definitely accelerated Porotech’s spin-off process from a blue sky research to a scalable business.”

Prof. Vasant Kumar and the whole MCG are proud of what Yingjun has achieved so far, it’s awesome to witness our fellow MCG members unlocking their highest potential in whatever field they are dedicating to. Vasant offers his best wishes for the bright future ahead of Porotech and Yingjun.
